A New Stunning Commodity Called Chili
By agusfanani
A must-available Dish
Although I'm not a chili lover due to my sensitive stomach to hot food, but people generally take it as a special dish. For those chili freaks their regular meals, meat balls, noodles, steamed food, porridge, soup, curry, fried rice and many other savory foods which are too many to mention one by one here, are not really enjoyable without chili, either it is as raw chilly or made as chili sauce. They may even lose their appetite to enjoy those dishes without chili with them. So don't underestimate chili, no wonder there is a jargon in the country saying: "Chili,It's powerful although it is tiny ".
It Suddenly becomes a prima donna
Chili suddenly becomes a prima donna nowadays. It suddenly becomes a stunning commodity when its price soars to a level we've never imagined before, surpassing the prices of high grades apples, grapes, pears, kiwis which are mostly imported, or the king of fruit Durian.
The price of chili (small chili) has reached 100,000 to 120,000 rupiah (around 11 to 13 US$) per kilo, which used to be 20,000 to 40,000 per kilo. This crazy price also attracts new and old farmers to try their luck to become new chili farmers. The euphoria also comes to every house to spare some part of their yards to be planted with chili, or at least, they grow it on potted soil if their houses don't have yards
Chili's rising price has brought some extraordinary consequences. Chili farmers have to increase their alertness and hire security guards to surveillance their chili fields, this sounds exaggerating but it's really necessary since chili alluring price has increased looting lately.
As a big consumption commodity, chili is included in calculation of the country's economic indicators and another effect of chili's increasing price that it contributes to the swelling January 2011's inflation rate.
What makes it so expensive ?
All walks of people from government high rank officials, economist, chili merchants, housewives, restaurant owners, street vendors complain and try give their theories what has caused chilly so expensive. Theories contributed by those various heads finally share the same end that bad weather in the country is considered the main cause of chili's wild price.
Yes, like some other parts of the world do, Indonesia suffers prolonged weather anomaly these days. Dry season which should have taken place from April until October 2010 was replaced by heavy, windy rainy days. So we experienced rainy season all year long last year. Chili is susceptible to excessive water. Too intensive rainy water has caused spoilage in many areas known as chili main producers , which makes the markets in short of chili supplies. To make the condition poorer, transportation is also hampered by this severe weather problem, another factor which worsens chili supplies.
This prolonged weather irregularity has disrupted many sectors, not only agricultural sectors. Fisheries, shipping, transportation, tourism also get the impacts.
The occurrence of severe weather disruptions and weather anomaly have been more intensive recently. These conditions also happen in other parts of the world with floods, snow storms, and land slides have struck some countries.
I don't mean to overstate but behind this unusual condition I, deep in heart, wish the earth still sufficiently has its carrying capacity to let us live and get protection, and hope that the impacts of global warming are not coming too soon.

Interesting hub about chili peppers! Thank you for sharing.
@Jamie Brock: You're welcome, Thank you for reading this hub too.
@Truckstop Sally: Thank you very much for reading and your nice comments. chili is everybody's favorite, and I like it if it's not too hot.
Too expensive! Hmmm... maybe we should suggesting an exchange for chilly. How about balsam? It is as hot as chilly, right? LOL
nice one , check my hubpages too
@Freya cesare:Yes balsam is hot, what about balsam plus sandals...(lol), must be hotter... Thank you Freya for that fun comments.
@Sameerk: Thank you, I (have read)and surely will drop by at your hubs again.
thank u , ur hubs is also very informative
I do love the chili. I'll have mine with textured vegetable protein instead of any meat added. I hope we don't see a big rise in the cost. God bless!
Hopefully your chili prices will come down when the weather returns to normal. Crops of all sorts are continually affected by weather conditions...the bane of the farmer!
It is a shame that this has spurred stealing from the chili fields and taking away profits from the farmers growing the chilis.
Hi, SameerK. I'm glad if my hub can give useful information for the readers. It's very kind of you to give nice comments, thank you so much.
Hi Micky Dee, chili is many people's favorite, I hope the price will get back to normal soon. Thank you very much for having read this hub.
Hello Peggy W. I think the rain intensity is calming down which hopefully brings change to chili price too. High chili price is neither good for consumers or the country's economy. This month's inflation is high because of soaring chili price. Thank you very much Peggy W.
I love chili peppers, but one option is to grow you own if these are going up in price.
Unusual and extreme weather is often the culprit when it comes to driving up prices on fruits and vegetables. I know here that there is currently a shortage of tomatoes and their price has gone up steeply thanks to colder than normal temperatures, flooding, and other weather related causes.
I'm like you with chilies...a little goes a long way! They can be just too hot for me sometimes.
@SweetiePie: Yes, I"ve learned from this situation and start to grow some vegetables myself. Thank you very much SweetiePie.
@mulberryw1: We should consider greenhouse farming to cope with unpredictable weather. Thank you very much Mulberry1.
iam growing chilies and other veg here in here this summer
as the fresh veg hiking :))
balinese
@Balinese: I think one of strategies in coping with high prices of veggies is by planting them like what you do at home. I do the same thing at home too. Thank you very much for dropping by.
very nice hub. I like to have spicy and little hot food so we do use chillies in al forms in our home.

Interesting info on the price of chilis and the weather. It makes sense; I had just not considered it before. In the Texas and the Southwest, we use chili powder (red chilis)to make our chili dish (often with ground beef).
